Pitch Lake

On the island of Trinidad of the Caribbean you will find the largest deposit of natural asphalt in the world.

It appeared during the Pliocene movements 70 Mio. years ago by mixing of oil and asphalt with mineral aggregates as a result of complex geological processes, and came to the surface in a hollow at the southern edge of the island.
This “Pitch Lake” is slightly folded and hard enough to walk on, but there are some small areas of soft material which can be dangerous.

The whole sea which flow lines stretch subterranean over the whole area, is constantly moving with a natural slow “stirring”, and holes arising from excavating are filled up automatically within shortest time.
